Instagram shows your profile picture in a small circle at the top of your page, in stories and next to comments. It is one of the smallest avatars on any platform, so simple pictures work best.

This page opens on the Background tab. On Instagram the background color matters most, because it is the ring of color people see around your face and it sits right above your feed.

Match the picture to your feed

Accounts that look put together usually repeat a small palette. Your avatar can anchor it.

• Warm feed: peach, cream or terracotta background with brown or blonde hair.
• Cool feed: pale blue or sage background with dark hair.
• Bold feed: one saturated color, such as cobalt or hot pink, behind a simple character.
• Minimal feed: white or pale grey background and a muted outfit.

Personal, creator or shop

For a personal account, make the avatar look like you. For a creator account, treat it as a mascot and give it one signature item. For a small shop or page, a character can serve as a friendly logo: keep it very simple, use your brand color as the background, and keep the same picture for a long time so people learn it.

The story ring

When you post a story, Instagram draws a colored ring around your picture. Dark or very busy backgrounds fight with that ring. A light Solid background lets the ring show clearly and makes your picture easier to spot in the stories row.
